The exercise

You will have 1.5 hours to do the following exercises.

1. Please take note of at least three (3) terms related to textiles, fabric, fashion, or technology that you did not know previously. Write them down and define them as best you can.

2. Describe three (3) different textiles or materials from the show that are of interest to you. Answer the following:

What is the name of the textile?

What interests you about the material? How does it make you feel?

What does it look/feel like?

Please draw (as best you can) a sample.

3. After visiting the exhibit and different rooms, and documenting the three textiles in the 2nd exercise.  Choose one of the rooms/spaces of the Cooper Mansion and create a piece of furniture for the room.  You can choose a space in the backyard, or the main entrance, somewhere in the second floor, etc.

This piece of furniture should be mainly comprised of one of the three materials that you previously described and documented  (in exercise #2).   Feel free to create a piece of furniture that is practical, something decorative, a piece of art, and/or something fun or frivolous.

Examples:

  • Create a "Jungle Gym" out of the material that is used for the AIR BEAM for the Cooper Hewitts’s backyard.
  • Use the  EDELRID ROPES to create a colorful decorative plant for the Cafe area.
  • Use the  3DL  textile, used on sailboats,  as the material for a gigantic lamp shade  installed in one of the darker rooms.

Illustrate your creation!  Draw / write, communicate your idea.  Describe how/if the room changes with your piece of furniture?  Does it create any cool shadows?

Go draw, write and enjoy the show.
