Finding the Universal Principles of Design in the World

I came across a very good book called the Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kitrina Holden and Jill Butler. Check it out here at Amazon

The book is a library of design concepts, but what is the most interesting aspect of this book is that besides providing the traditional alphabetical order, it groups the concepts addressing different design challenges. Some of the groupings include: “How can I help people learn from design” to “How can I make better design decisions”. What gets me excited about this book is to see how this information is presented in a useful way.

So I have decided to explore this book not as a passive critical reader but as a active agent. I am going to find examples, make them or provide thoughts that support one of the groupings of the design patterns. The goal is not only to see how well the principles are explained but to reinforced my knowledge. The design group I will be exploring is “How can I make better design decisions”. This will come in handy since everyday I make design decisions either at work or at home. Tomorrow the race begins!
