The Abacus is a musical Instrument part of a performance, RGB Video Room. The Abacus allows the control of the tempo, pitch and direction individually of three music videos in real time. The concept of this project was to explores ways to create a dialogue between one-way "communication" mediums like television. The performance re-enacts by bedroom growing up in Panama, full of music and powerful music videos provided by cable television, specifically MTV.
The content is the videos is "Take on me" by A-ha, "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode and "Thriller" by Michael Jackson [some of my favorite videos!]. The technology of this controller is a resistor ladder that sends analog messages to the micro-controller, which sends MIDI information to Max/Msp JITTER, that allows the control and the alteration of the color of the videos. This project was developed at the NIME Spring 2005: Tools for the DJ course taught by Gideon D'Arcangelo at Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU.
